In addition to my private practice, I also offer a counselling service to schools. I take an integrated approach with the pastoral and safeguarding teams to support some of schools' most vulnerable young people. Communication is important and while I create a confidential space with the young people I see in schools, I also ensure they know that I work within the school's safeguarding policy to keep children safe.
Counselling can be a refuge for some children in school; a safe place just to be. The therapeutic work can often involve making things, creating things and talking things through. Building warm, trusting relationships with the young people and meeting them where they're at is what I hold as most important.
Young people have had a rough ride. More so than those of us that came before them. The demand on counselling services for young people is unprecedented and it is an ongoing challenge to meet the demand. I work closely with pastoral teams to refer only those for whom counselling is an appropriate intervention and to ensure that they will be seen over the next academic term to avoid long waiting times. I like students to be kept updated with their waiting time and given the opportunity to change their mind. I see students in blocks of 6-12 weeks to ensure that the opportunity for effective counselling is open to as many students as possible.
If you work for a school and would like to explore the opportunity of working together, please complete the form on the Get in Touch page and we will organise a meeting to discuss our potential collaboration.
